The principal element of the décor Le Jardin d’Armide, created and printed by Jules Desfossé, the foremost wallpaper manufacturer of the Second Empire.
The décor was presented and awarded a prize at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1855.
Designed by Édouard Muller (1823-1876), known as “the Painter of Roses” — the first time flowers were rendered realistically in a wallpaper decor.
This section of the décor, the statue of Armide on her bed of flowers, is of the period and in perfect condition. It has been remounted on a modern white background, lined on linen canvas and stretcher.
